Where exactly is it located?Dog Island is located in the United States Gulf Coast, in the west end of Florida. It is just 3.5 miles off-shore from Carrabelle, which is is Franklin County, Florida.

Why is it called Dog Island?In 1536, the island and two neighboring ones were discovered by the French. The French chose to call them the Dog Islands either because of the wild dogs that they found on them, or because the three islands look like a crouching dog.

If dogs don't inhabit it then who does?After World War II, a business man from Florida decided that the island would make an excellent vacation area and purchased it for $12,000. It is now a common vacation and tourist site.

The tides of dog island remain consistent year round with a low in the inches range and a high of just over 1 foot. The tides remain consistent year round. Over the course of the last few years the tides have not changed much. As the image on the left shows, the island mainly consists of two beaches and some green land in between. The island is relatively flat and it is surrounded by patches of submerged rocks.
